Don’t Forget! Mraz on SNL, Jan 31

Hey Everyone,

Just a reminder that Jason will be the musical guest on Saturday Night Live tomorrow, Jan 31. Steve Martin is hosting, so the rest of the show might actually be worth watching.

Jason Mraz Does Vegas

Jason will be in Las Vegas May 8-9, 2009 to open for Dave Matthews. I don’t think I’m going to make it to one of those shows, but that’s ok, because I had my own Mraz experience in Vegas this weekend.

I met up with my friend, Chris, who was making his first trip to the States. I imagine going from London to Vegas is about as weird as going from London to Mars, but he seemed to have a pretty good time. We saw Blue Man Group, we gambled a little, we drank more than a little, and we caught as many of the free attractions as possible.

At some point I was talking about all the small trips I made at the end of last year to visit friends and catch Mraz shows. His response was the typical, “Jason who?”

One of the Bellagio's Mraztified speakers.

One of the Bellagio's Mraztified speakers.

But on day two, we were outside the Bellagio, having just watched the water fountains dance around to Celine Dion. (Not the best piece of music the Bellagio has. Honestly, that woman ruins everything.)

After the show finished we decided to head across the street to a couple of the casinos we hadn’t seen yet when over the speakers I heard, “Was it you who spoke the words…

“That’s Jason Mraz!” I told Chris.
“Hmm? Oh, right.” Chris was not enthused, but smiled politely, as charming Englishmen are trained to do.

So Jason serenaded us down the street, cleaning all the Dion out of the air, until we crossed out of the Bellagio’s territory. It was a nice moment, with the sun shining and the skies all blue and hopeful and the guilt of my gambling losses the night before all but gone 🙂

I’m all about them words,

Two Things I Didn’t Think I’d Ever See

A year ago, I thought Obama was a long shot. Thank goodness I was wrong.

A year ago, I thought Jason Mraz would never be mainstream enough to be the musical guest on Saturday Night Live. Thank goodness I was wrong?

We are so excited!!! Jason Mraz will be the featured musical guest on Saturday Night Live January 31st with host and SNL alum Steve Martin! Check local listings for station and time and be sure to tune in!

That’s from his Facebook page. And it is exciting, but it also reminds me of his LA show in November (where he packed the 5,800+ seats at the Greek Theatre) when he said that people complained to him that his shows were getting too big and popular and he said something like, “Well stop telling people. I didn’t do this, you did.”

Yes, we did.

And now I just hope that the rest of the country can join their feelings of Obama love and hope and change into the Mraz spirit of kindness and gratitude and hot sex. (I threw that last one in their from my own list of priorities. I don’t think Jason would mind.)

What a happy, wonderful place this country might start to be.

Sing to me a song of love,
Lisa

Jason Mraz Wrote My Annual Review

Mraz Steal ThingsWell, he helped anyway.

This is the time of the year when everyone in my company has to write a self-evaluation. It’s pretty much the least enjoyable thing I ever have to do here, because as much as I like to write, and even though I get paid to write, I loathe writing in corporate-speak.

If it were up to me, my review would read something like: “I finished all my work on time. I did my best to be nice to people (even the annoying ones). I wasn’t perfect, but I think I did a damn good job and you should be very thankful that I show up every day.”

Instead they want something that reads more like: “Considered data provided by business partners when building content matrix of user options and dynamic help, to determine information hierarchies.”

I don’t think that makes any sense, but it’s got enough buzzwords in it to make it sound like I know what I’m doing.

The most difficult part of this already tedious evaluation was figuring out how to address feedback regarding my attitude. Apparently, I could be nicer. I mean, I’m nice, I bake lots of cookies and loan people books and DVDs (and burn them Jason Mraz CDs to hook them into our happy little community), but that’s just the people I like. The people I don’t like… know it.

I’ve never been very good at pretending to like people who I find to be repulsive, shallow, smarmy, incompetent or just dull. I’m working on it though, trying to find that one good thing that everyone is supposed to have in them and focus on it, even when they’re saying, “So, I just went ahead and rewrote this all for you so you know what I want. I hope that’s ok. [Smirk]”

Deep breath.

Right, so how to say, “Really, I promise, I’m really trying to be a more kind, patient person in the office. Honest I am”? I started over and over again and nothing was quite right, but as I was listening to We Steal Things I realized the answer was right in front of me the whole time.

Practiced kindness and gratitude for team members by encouraging their participation, thanking them for their time and ideas and increasing time spent in face-to-face interactions to ensure I delivered work that met their expectations.”

Mraz and his philosophy save the day. And for that, I am truly grateful.

Desperation is a mambo. Dance it,
Lisa

New Year, New International Tour?

I almost did it, you guys. I came so close.

When Jason’s European tour dates were announced I was looking at maps, thinking about which tickets to buy, telling myself that a 2009 International Friends and Family Tour through England, Germany, France and Spain was just the logical next step from my 2008 domestic tour.

But then I thought about all the other things I could do with the time and money, and I considered how cold and gross it will be in March, and I came to my senses.

Sydney Opera HouseSo I’m going to New Zealand and Australia instead :) It’s summer there.

This trip is not Mraz related in any way, it’s just an opportunity that came up when a friend offered me a free plane ticket. I have a friend in Christchurch I haven’t seen in almost ten years and several friends in Sydney from when I was going to school there, so it is a Friends Tour, but without the music this time.

So, if anybody has tips for having a good time in Auckland in late February/early March, let me know. I’ll be in Sydney in time for Mardi Gras, so I’ve got that city covered.

I gotta leave town, Mr. Nally,
Lisa

“Lucky” New Video for 2009

This actually came out in 2008, but I could only squeeze in so many updates before the new year.

mraz_lucky

Lucky” is the duet between Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat. Jason Mraz is in this video. Colbie Caillat is in this video. At no point are they within, say, 7,000 miles of each other.

I imagine the idea for this video went something like:

Music Exec 1: “I’m Yours” is running out of steam. How do we capitalize on the feel-good Mraz thing?

Music Exec 2: Let’s push “Lucky” while people still remember who Colbie Caillat is.

#1: The wrinkly nose chick?

#2: Yeah.

#1: Great. Get them into a studio.

#2: Uh, Mraz is in Europe for the next few weeks. How about we throw him in a suit and file him wandering some charming cobblestone streets? That’s romantic.

#1: Perfect. And we’ll get her on a beach, looking dreamy and wearing white. That’s romantic too.

#2: It’ll be a hit!

It’s actually a little weird and disjointed, and Jason looks like he just came from high school jazz band practice with that white tie. I do dig his crazy hair though, and it’s always fun to have something new.

I’ll put a flower in your hair,
Lisa
