Selections From Friends in Foreign Places

I love getting group email from my friend Vanessa in Germany. They always look like this:

Freue mich jetzt schon auf Post in Mengen, stundenlange Telefonate und noch mehr auf euren Besuch im kühlen Norden!!! Ihr seid herzlich eingeladen.

I have no idea what it means, but I think it’s sweet that she includes me anyway, and she’s usually happy to translate when I write back with, “A who in the what now?”

My great grandparents came over from Germany and I feel a little guilty that I don’t know much more than “tusch” or “achtung, baby”. But in one of his many versions of “0% Interest”, Jason Mraz says that in Germany they do operas in English and sing about park benches, so at least if I go to visit I’ll be able to take in some culture and know exactly what’s going on.

She got a better deal than the next guy,
Lisa
