Ode to Steve Kornacki
March 7, 2008The first thing you’ll be asking is, “Who’s Steve Korniacki?”
Short answer: He’s the guy you see in this clip from MSNBC, a columnist for the New York Observer.
The longer answer is more intersting though, and it makes me smile, so here it goes.
Steve was an 18-year-old kid who showed up on my dorm floor about ten years ago when I was an RA at Boston University. I think his real age was closer to 65 though, and I seem to remember he had the Bob Newhart collection to prove it, as well as a wardrobe that would have suited him well for retirement in Florida – lots of polo shirts, practical white shoes, and was there a fishing hat of some kind? Maybe.
Steve was quiet, not one of those kids who was always running room to room to gossip and hang out or kick back. He gave money to people on the street because they looked honest enough, and I was pretty sure he’d get eaten alive before graduation.
I was also a little worried that he might spend all four years of school in his room, dressed in his robe and watching CNN. That would have kept him safer, but not any more social. Luckily, the other kids got to know him, saw that he was super smart and funny, and he slowly came out of both his shell and his room. He came out enough, in fact, to announce at a floor meeting once that his new major was going to be Gettin It On With the RA. We had created a monster, although a sweet one.
So what’s happened since then? For one thing, it looks like our Steve Kornacki turned into a bit of a hottie. Strange how guys are able to do that, look younger and better at 30 than they did at 20. In Steve’s case, I think the suit and haircut help a bit.
It’s amazing what can happen in ten years, the changes people can make. Some of my other residents are busy working in TV and film. One of my friends spends weekends in LA, putting together interviews with celebrities. And some of my friends are happily puttering away in the suburbs, a kid on each hip and a minivan in the driveway. It makes me feel a little bit behind, not having figured out what I want to be when I grow up yet. Do I have to decide now? Or at all? Is it too late to become a fighter pilot/figure skater? Maybe I could become a flight attendant and roller skate in my free time.
The next question is where’s the rest of the 14C class of 2001?
As the reason (main one) for Mr. Kornacki to leave his room freshman year, all I can say is, “I made a mistake. A horrible, horrible mistake.” This post Lisa only inflates his ego. He carry his articles around in his pocket. It’s that bad.
Guess how I found this blog? Mr. Ego sent it to me.
Besides you should be posting about me and how wonderful I am.
Your neighbor for 2 years.
- Matt Kaplan
Matt Kaplan! My goodness. If I’d known all I had to do to find you was write about Steve I would have done it ages ago. Clearly, I was just using him to get to you.
Now I feel bad I didn’t do a better job with this article. I dashed it out between meetings and deadlines and didn’t really get a chance to explore the bizarre happiness that was 14C.
I’m not sure what I would write in a Matt Kaplan post. Probably just, “Shhhhh! Can you keep it down over there?”
14C is taking over the world one media outlet at a time!
It may have been our fault that Steve didn’t come out of his room for the first few months of freshman year. I seem to remember Kaplan and I accusing him of being a robot who used his oversized PC to charge up at night.
I was made to understand there was an embarrassing picture of Steve on this site. I was lied to.
Kaplan is obviously still cranky that I ran him off of the intramural team that he recruited me for. As for Burns, if I’d known what I was getting myself into, I would have stayed away from him for much longer. I have no shots to take a Tenley.
Who could take shots at Tenley? She’s awesome and there’s not a bad thing you could ever say about her. Except for… you know. That one thing. But we won’t talk about it here.
Ha!! I’ve been trying to figure out if Steve Kornacki is THE Steve Kornacki! Thanks for solving the mystery.
As I searched for Kornacki’s latest tome online following the election, I found this blog. Months after seeing him on CNN — espousing the same views as he did during late night conversation in the Kornacki/Kaplan/Pransky abode in Allston — and people cared!
Thanks for bringing up broomball. I have a rather incriminating video of “Coach K” in full rant mode as Pransky’s Foxtrot Delta delt him yet another loss.
Congrats and good luck.
